Omoguard Paste (33g)

Once-daily omeprazole for treatment and prevention of gastric ulcers in horses and foals.

Contains: Omeprazole 370mg/g

Features and Benefits
Once-daily omeprazole for treatment and prevention of gastric ulcers in horses and foals.
Omeprazole is a proton-pump inhibitor and suppresses gastric acid by specific inhibition of the H+/K+ ATPase enzyme system at the secretory surface of the parietal cell. Omeprazole will block gastric acid secretion irrespective of the stimulus. Maximum acid suppression occurs after 3 - 5 days of treatment.
By suppressing acid production, OMOGUARD creates a more neutral gastric environment which reduces ongoing damage to the gastric mucosa and also allows improved healing of existing damage.
OMOGUARD is formulated with an oil carrier base to protect the Omeprazole from acid degradation in the stomach. On passage to the alkaline intestinal environment, the Omeprazole becomes biologically available and is rapidly absorbed into the bloodstream.

Treatment and prevention of gastric ulcers in horses and foals.
OMOGUARD is effective in horses under a variety of management conditions, including racing or showing, in horses and foals as young as one month of age.

Dosage and Administration
Treatment : 4 mg/kg/day - Adult horse (500 kg) 5 mL orally once daily for 28 days. (1 mL per 100 kg).
Prevention : 1 mg/kg/day - Adult horse (500 kg) 1.25 mL orally once daily for 28 days or longer. (0.25 mL per 100 kg).
Set the adjustable dose syringe to the required volume and ensure the horse's mouth is empty prior to administration. Place nozzle into the side of the mouth and deposit the paste between the teeth and the cheek, or far over the back of the tongue. The product is very sticky so ensure it is applied onto the internal parts of the mouth, not just dropped into the oral cavity. Immediately raise the horse's head for a few seconds after dosing to ensure the full dose is swallowed. Monitor the horse and if any rejection or loss of medication is suspected, re-dosing is recommended.
Replace the cap after each use and store the syringe on its side.
Long-term treatment at the preventative dose rate is recommended to avoid recurrence of gastric ulcers.

OMOGUARD can be safely administered to foals from one month of age and to stallions used for breeding. Safety in pregnant or lactating mares has not been established.
Do not use in horses that may be slaughtered for human consumption.

30 mL (33 g) adjustable multi-dose syringe.
Each syringe provides 6 treatment doses or up to 24 prevention doses for a 500 kg horse.

Store in a dry place below 25˚C (Air Conditioning).

General Notes
Gastric Ulcers in Horses :
Clinical signs of gastric ulceration in horses include depressed appetite or inappetence, recurrent colic, intermittent loose faeces, chronic diarrhoea, poor hair coat, poor body condition or poor performance.
Clinical signs of gastric ulceration in foals include depressed appetite or inappetence, teeth grinding, dribbling saliva, diarrhoea, sternal recumbency or weakness.
Anecdotally, many people report that horses with ulcers are often difficult to handle and work but when treated with omeprazole at the effective dose rate (4mg/kg) their behaviour improves dramatically, often within a few days.

For accurate diagnosis, direct endoscopic examination of the gastric mucosa is recommended, however a positive response to treatment with omeprazole can give reasonable confirmation of gastric ulceration.
